Neurodiversity-Aware Training

Neurodiversity is at the heart of what we do at Poppy’s Tutoring Company.

We understand that every learner processes information, communicates and builds confidence

differently. A student may be highly capable but struggle with concentration, memory, organisation, processing speed, written work, anxiety or the pressures of a traditional classroom environment.

Our role is not to make a child fit one fixed style of teaching. We adapt the teaching to fit the child.

We support children and young people with a range of learning differences and additional needs, including:

• Dyslexia
• Dyscalculia
• Dyspraxia
• ADHD and ADD
• Autism
• OCD
• Selective mutism
• Processing and working-memory difficulties
• Executive-function challenges
• Anxiety and low confidence around learning

A formal diagnosis is not required. We are equally happy to support students who are awaiting an assessment, exploring possible additional needs or simply know that conventional teaching methods are not working for them.

A calm, individual approach

Before focusing on grades, we take time to understand the learner.

We consider their strengths, interests, communication style, confidence, sensory preferences and previous experiences of education. This allows us to create sessions that feel safe, manageable and genuinely engaging.

Depending on the individual student, our tutors may use:

• Visual and multisensory teaching methods
• Colour coding, diagrams and practical resources
• Clear routines and predictable lesson structures
• Shorter tasks broken into manageable steps
• Movement or processing breaks
• Interactive games and technology
• Repetition and overlearning without unnecessary pressure
• Alternative ways to record and communicate ideas
• Support with organisation, revision and executive-function skills
• Positive reinforcement and confidence-building strategies

Students are never made to feel rushed, embarrassed or judged for needing something explained in a different way.

Building confidence alongside academic progress

Many neurodivergent students come to tuition believing that they are “bad” at a subject or that they should already understand something.

Often, the difficulty is not their ability. They may need information presented differently, additional processing time, clearer structure or the confidence to ask questions without fear of getting something wrong.

Our tuition aims to help students understand how they learn best. Alongside subject knowledge, we help them develop practical strategies they can use at school, at home and in future examinations.

We celebrate progress in all its forms, whether that means completing a challenging question, expressing an idea independently, remaining engaged for longer or beginning to believe in their own ability again.

Carefully matched tutors

We carefully match each student with a tutor based on more than the subject they need help with.

We consider the learner’s personality, communication preferences, additional needs, interests and previous learning experiences. A strong, trusting relationship can make an enormous difference, particularly for students who have previously felt misunderstood or disengaged from education.

Our tutors are warm, patient and flexible. They understand that behaviour is often a form of communication and that a student who appears distracted, reluctant or disruptive may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious or unsure where to begin.

Support for families, schools and local authorities

We provide both online and in-person tuition and can support students through private family arrangements, school referrals, local-authority funding and Education, Health and Care Plans where appropriate.

We are happy to work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools and other professionals to provide consistent and meaningful support around the learner.

More than an additional service

Neurodiversity is not a separate or occasional part of our work. It shapes the way we teach.

Our aim is to create a learning environment where every student feels understood, respected and capable, and where differences are supported rather than treated as barriers.
